How to clear your mind of the niggling stuff

by Julie Baird on November 16, 2010

The more little tasks you have lurking around the more of your brain becomes distracted by them. Individually they would not actually take up much time, but added together they feel overwhelming. These tasks alone can make you feel out of control and worse will distract your attention form the big important tasks that you want to be tackling.

Making your Christmas list, buying milk, sorting out your sock drawer, tidying up your math notes, calling your Mom, all get blown out of proportion in your brain until it grinds to a guilt ridden halt.

But there is an easy answer to this state.

Action Days are an opportunity to cluster all those little tasks together and clear them off your plate.

Action Days don’t actually have to be a whole day, it could just be a couple of hours, but it is a dedicated amount of time to let you get your feet clear of all the niggling tasks you have outstanding.

  • Start by making a list (yes, you know I love lists) of all the things that are needing done, or are just not quite right in your world right now.
  • Cluster them around the type of activity they involve so you can get through them quicker. E mails, shopping, tidying, phone calls etc
  • Check them off the list as you get them done and you will get a buzz as you see your list shrinking.
  • If you want to super charge your action day then throw an accountability partner into the mix.

At the end of the allotted time wrap up your activities, and start your important work with a clearer head.

You will develop a sense of how often you need to plan in action days once you see how much you can get through and how much has built up before you feel the distracted guilty feelings again.

So, when are you going to have your first action day
